GM Day at the Museum of Transportation in Brookline MA

First I will start out by thanking Justin Hughes for setting this up!!! You can check out his page for his account of the day. Justin was able to talk to the club that was running the event about getting a few of us in for the show.  Like Justin, I figured that the show would mostly consist of older cars from the 60’s and 70’s, but I thought it would be fun to show the car, even though it wasn’t the SL2. They thought it would be nice to have us, so Justin let us know about it. Three of us were able to make it, there should have been four, but his car was totaled by a truck the week before. He was alright thanks to Saturn’s good safety record!!! He joined us later in the day with a friend of his to meet us and check out our cars. He soon will be getting a 98 SC2.

As you could probably guess, Justin was there with his 95 SC2. Cris showed up with his 95 SC2 autocross car, nice car I might add, and there was me with my 99 SC2 daily driver. We were the first of a few groups that wanted to have their own class to show up at the event. The deal was this, if you wanted your own class you had to have five pre-registered entrants. Seeing how there were only three of us, we didn’t worry about pre-registering, or getting our own class. The rest of the groups must not have gotten the required five pre-registered entrants, because none of them pre-registered. The club that was running the show ordered up another set of trophies just in case, however. Since no one seemed to get the five pre-registered entrants, and we were the first group to show up that wanted our own class, we got it!!! Cool, three cars, three trophies!!! Who will get the gold?

Cris had the most modified Saturn. His of modifications was similar to those in my SL2, except for the internals. His suspension is a little different as well. He has the H&R springs with Carrera struts, nice!!! He was complaining all day about how he wasn’t able to get the car cleaned at all because he ran an autocross the day before, but I saw nothing wrong with it. It looked spotless to me, except for the dead bug collection on the rear deck. J

Justin came in second on the modification list for the day. Much more modified than my SC2, which I have no plans in modifying, and slightly less modified than Cris’ SC2. His was the cleanest of the three, since he spent more time cleaning it than the rest of us. He was at my house the day before and did a complete wash, vacuum and three step wax. His car looked brand new when he was done with it!!! Gotta love those plastic panels that don’t dent or ding.

Then there was my car. Thank god for gray paint!!! It hides everything. I did a quick wash job the day before while Justin was busy waxing. I had my 17 inch rims on it, which I think look better on the coupe than the sedan, and I transplanted the chrome intake from the sedan to the coupe for the show. It was nice to hear the engine for once!!! Other than that, the only other modification the car has is the custom short shifter and carbon fiber knob.

The rain held off just long enough to keep the cars clean for the whole show. People were walking around and voting for cars in their respective classes. A few people stopped to ask us questions, and of course we were happy to answer them. No one had any negative comments, and a few were excited to see us doing these kinds of things to our cars because they owned, or new someone that owned a Saturn. All in all, it was a good day.

The Other Cars:

There were a couple other newer cars, but most were from the 60’s and 70’s. There was one modern car that caught my eye as it was pulling in. It was an Oldsmobile Alero, except it sounded slightly different, not quite like any V6 I have ever heard. It had Cragar rims and oversize drag tires. No big deal, until he popped the hood, and my eyes were able to verify what my ears had heard. That was no ordinary V6 under the hood, in fact it was not a V6 at all!!! This guy had stuffed a Chevy 454 big block V8 under the hood that drives the rear wheels!!! This guy bought the car brand new, brought it home, and took it apart. He fit the body onto a Chevy S-10 Blazer frame so it could handle the rear drive and and slightly larger engine. The odometer had just barely flipped 600 miles when it was complete. It was quite the ride if you ask me!!!

The Results:

Well, we were all going home with something today, the question was, who was going to get what?  Justin speculated that Cris would win because it was in full autocross mode, and had the most modifications.   Cris speculated that I would win because mine appeared to be the cleanest.  I wasn't sure who would win.  I didn't think it was going to be me simply because I didn't have many modifications.  It was a toss up between Justin's car and Cris' car because they are very similarly modified.  I would have picked Cris because of all of his modifications even though I like the green color of Justin's much better.  I guess I'm just partial to the green for some reason.

Well, the final results were, Cris took first place, I took second, and Justin took third!!
